Page 3 (How to make your own web tools)

Learn, how to make your own icons, cartoons (and animations), and a "mini" search engine for your web page.

We have covered in the previous page of where you can get "ready made" icons.

1., Here, we will discuss some options, of how can you make your own. You may want your web page to look unique, or you may want a text included in the icon, that is not available 'out there'.

newFrom my web page.

First, I drew the picture in my paint program, inserted the text, and then "converted" the picture to a 'gif.' image. From this point on I handled the picture the same as any other image. When I was editing my web page, I just had

to specify the image size. It works well with the most frequently used web browsers. There is a drawback that not all of the browsers support that, e.g. the IBM Internet Explorer you don't get a small size icon, but a full screen picture. If you use your paint program, use only 16 colors.

2., You may also draw your cartoon, or picture on a piece of paper, then scan it. You can specify the size of the picture, when you edit it. This is what I did to show some of my cartoons from my book.

3., To create your own animation, you need to buy software in a store.

However, you may use your web editor's "blinking" feature (properties/text/character/blink in netscape). Combining this with your text, or colored fonts, you may create a 'primitive' but still interesting animation.

hyphen and exclamation mark blink! ---! ! !.

blinking arrow <             (using properties, text, character, 'strikethrough' and 'blink')

4.,  Creating a 'mini' search engine for your own site.

Long lists on your page may be hard to follow. To better organize the content of your page you may want a 'mini' search engine, that is really a series of links. I have also used this in one of my page.

There are real search engines available that you can use on your own web page. Unless you have a really large volume to organize, it is useless for you. (If people look for something - e.g.they type in kangaroo and your page has nothing to do with it, it would just annoy them.)

For medium sized information you may use the ABC linked to the first letter of your key words (subtitles).

This web page contains cartoons and animations. Best viewed by Netscape or a browser supporting gif.animation. If you experience problems viewing it 1, try clicking on "images" on your toolbar, 2, or try double clicking on each icon symbol, 3, or go to 'options' - 'auto load images'. Once you see the cartoons and animations I'm sure that you will enjoy this page.
