Since 1996 -when we created the following web design tips - the use of javasripts and java programs had been excedingly popular:
Here is a wonderful example of one of the great pages from one of the developer of these java sripts: http://www.iinet.net.au/~biab ,
1., To build a great looking web page you may want to include some CoLoR into your page. You have several options. There is an advantage to use the 'font color' option of your web editor (like the one I was using here with netscape navigator gold). The download time is quicker so you have better chances that people would stick around and wait until your page would appear on their screen. If you have a huge full color image at the top of your home page, it is certainly impressive, but not practical as it requires lot of memory and time to download.
The third option is the use of icons,

2., Icons can give much color to your page. You may buy a kit in the store, or look up 'icons' in search engines like Yahoo, Infoseek, Alta Vista, Excite, or Web Crawel. We will also show you some links to check out.
Technically, to download, and to get your own copy, you have to point the arrow of your mouse on the icon (picture) you wish to obtain, and to double click on the right side of your mouse. A copy then is transferred to your disk or hard drive. Please always check for the original source, and watch if it is intended as a resource to download, or if it is a copyrighted material. I cannot give you a legal advice, but one thing that is nice in the Internet is that people 'give away' free stuff . Internet would not work if there would be a charge for everything. If they request it please give them a link or acknowledgement. If you really liked what they were doing you may sponsor them by buying from them.
Here are some examples: 1, 2, (please also see resources bellow)

3., Animation (supported by most of the web browsers) - See resources below.
They are really fun. You have seen some examples at Page 1 of web building tools and at my other (main web pages).

Would not recommend using many animations close to each other. Use them more sparingly, and with a 'surprise' effect. It brings out the child in everybody.

In 1996 we listed the following additional resources:
I find Yahoo particularly useful in searching for "gif animations", and icons.
Here are some additional links that you may find useful:
I gratefully
acknowledge a credit for Steven Thomas for some of his icons
used in this web site.
"Abed's
Icon Collection"
I have looked a number of gif. animation collections. I would recommend that you make your own search. (Watch out it is easy to be lost). However, here are some links. (No guarantees)

As you can see a web page can be real interesting. For even more, check
out this link for a great page where you can choose from
background sounds or view shockwave, see QuickTime Virtual Reality, ViewMovie,
or a stereo MIDI music.
Interactive icons, Java applications
. See my alternate
home page for a java script that is real fun. The menu would
scroll down and follow you so you can always see your link options. You
can also see jump menus on that page. With java script you can also open
a new window when you click on a link.

This web page contains cartoons and animations. Best viewed by Netscape or a browser supporting gif.animation. If you experience problems viewing it 1, try clicking on "images" on your toolbar, 2, or try double clicking on each icon symbol, 3, or go to 'options' - 'auto load images'. Once you see the cartoons and animations I'm sure that you will enjoy this page.
These pages were also made possible by a number of people who were giving their time and talents to make the Internet interesting and useful. I have learned far more from browsing on the Internet, then from expensive computer courses. I would highly recommend netsearch for web building tools. Please always refer to the original sources. Some people allow you to use their resource for free, some asks for a link, and some asks specifically not to overburden their internet provider with a link.
